  • PSHE & RSE

We aim to develop happy, healthy, and confident children through a supportive PSHE curriculum. By building resilience, relationships, and self-awareness, we help them thrive now and in the future.

At Our Lady Catholic Primary School, Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, including Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), is a fundamental part of our curriculum and wider school life. As a Catholic school, our approach to PSHE is rooted in the Gospel values of love, respect and compassion, and in the belief that every person is created in the image and likeness of God.

Our PSHE curriculum aims to support children to grow into confident, caring and responsible individuals who are able to form positive relationships, make informed choices and contribute meaningfully to society. We recognise the vital role PSHE plays in promoting wellbeing, safeguarding pupils and preparing them for life in modern Britain.

PSHE and RSE are delivered through a combination of Ten Ten Resources – Life to the Full, which provides a faith-based approach to Relationships and Sex Education, and the PSHE Association Programme of Study, which ensures comprehensive coverage of statutory PSHE content. This combined approach enables us to meet statutory requirements while remaining fully aligned with Catholic teaching and our school’s mission.

    Intent

At Our Lady’s, our intention is that by the time children leave, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotional stability to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible when they put their mind to it. In a world that is constantly changing, it is important that our children are aware, to an appropriate level, of the different factors which affect their world, and that they learn the skills needed to deal with these, in order to have a good mental health and wellbeing.

Our PSHE curriculum aims to develop every child’s learning and as a result develops an acquisition of knowledge and skills that will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a responsible member of the school community who is accountable for their actions, and as they progress throughout their education (and beyond), will become a responsible citizen within our wider community. Within this, our curriculum also promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for experiences, opportunities and responsibilities in later life. This recognises that each child is made in the image and likeness of God. Our Relationships and Sex Education programme enables our children to learn how to be safe and sensible, as well as to understand the importance of and develop healthy relationships, now and in their future lives.

    Implementation

PSHE, including RSE, is delivered through a structured and progressive curriculum that draws on Ten Ten Life to the Full and the PSHE Association Programme of Study, ensuring full coverage of statutory content and best practice.

EYFS provision - In Reception, PSHE is taught within their continuous provision on the children’s personal, social and emotional development (PSED) which is vital for children to lead healthy and happy lives, and in turn it is crucial to their cognitive development. Therefore, it is embedded throughout the Foundation Stage curriculum. The EYFS Personal, Social and Emotional Development statements are taken from the ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ and the PSED Early Learning Goals.

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 - At Our Lady’s, our PSHE programme of study and our wider curriculum enables our children to meet the statements set out in the Relationships and Sex Education and the Health Education guidance. Our PSHE curriculum is an integral part of our school PSHE curriculum and is set up to meet all the needs of our pupils. Not only through our PSHE lessons, but also other educational opportunities, assemblies, themed days, visits and visitors are used to support the teaching. Across Key Stage 1 and 2, we follow the ‘PSHE Association Programme of Study’ scheme of work (from Year 1 to Year 6),

This programme builder takes a thematic approach to primary PSHE education, covering all three core themes of the Programme of Study (Health and Wellbeing; Relationships; and Living in the Wider World) over the school year, with three topics per half term. This approach allows different year groups to work on similar themes at the same time, building a spiral programme year on year, whilst offering flexibility in terms of medium-term planning.

These learning opportunities offer a wide range of involvement, including discussions, debates, as well as written tasks. Our learning allows our children to develop their personal skills, knowledge and understanding to make informative decisions and develop the right attitudes. All children are provided with a PSHE book that displays evidence of their understanding of the subjects covered. Overall, our aim for the PSHE curriculum is to show an awareness and provide learning opportunities that meet the needs all our pupils. Through the ‘PSHE Association Programme of Study’ scheme of work, each year group studies the same unit, appropriate to their age group, at the same time. Also, throughout our PSHE and wider curriculum, we aim to build in links to British Values and is taught in such a way to reflect on and promote the overall aims, values and ethos of our school.

    Impact

At Our Lady’s, we expect all teachers to use the PSHE Association programme of study to equip pupils with a sound understanding of potential problems and with the knowledge and skills they need to overcome any issues and to make safe and informed decisions. By the end of Key Stage 2, our children will also have the appropriate knowledge and understanding to make the right decisions in relation to Relationship, Sex (RSE) and Health Education. PSHE is an essential part of the Primary curriculum and is integral to the development of children’s values for them to become a positive, responsible citizen within a forever-changing community and wider world. Our assemblies will help to develop our children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity. By combining Life to the Full with the PSHE Association Programme of Study, pupils receive a balanced education that is both faith-led and relevant to modern life.

    As a result, pupils:

    · Demonstrate respect for themselves and others, recognising the dignity of every person.

    · Show increasing emotional literacy, resilience and self-awareness.

    · Build and maintain positive, healthy relationships.

    · Understand how to keep themselves safe, including online safety and managing risk.

    · Are able to make informed choices guided by Catholic values and moral responsibility.

    · Leave the school well-prepared for the next stage of education and life in society.

The effectiveness of PSHE is evaluated through pupil voice, staff observations, behaviour and wellbeing, parental feedback and yearly curriculum review, ensuring it continues to meet statutory requirements and the needs of our Catholic school community.

    Inclusion

In line with our Catholic mission, PSHE and RSE are inclusive and accessible to all pupils. We believe that every child is uniquely created by God and deserves to be valued, respected and supported.

    We ensure inclusion by:

    · Providing a curriculum that meets the needs of all pupils, including those with SEND, through appropriate differentiation, scaffolding and support.

    · Promoting equality, respect and understanding for all, and actively challenging prejudice, bullying and discrimination.

    · Teaching sensitive topics with care and compassion, recognising the diversity of family backgrounds and experiences within our school community.

    · Ensuring that all pupils feel safe, listened to and able to participate fully in PSHE lessons.

    · Remaining faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church while fostering a culture of respect and kindness towards everyone.

    Monitoring & Review

The effectiveness of PSHE and RSE is monitored yearly and reviewed to ensure it continues to meet statutory requirements, reflects Church teaching and responds to the needs of our pupils.

The coordination and planning of the PSHE curriculum are the responsibility of the PSHE Lead who also:

    · Supports colleagues in their teaching, by keeping them informed about current developments in PSHE and providing a strategic lead and direction for this subject.

    · Gives the Head Teacher feedback in which he evaluates the strengths and weaknesses in PSHE and together they indicate areas for further improvement.

    · Uses specific allocated regular management time to review evidence of the children’s work / progress and to observe PSHE lessons and learning walks across the school.

    · Shares best practice regarding PSHE with teachers and delivers a ‘modelled’ lesson.

    · Pupil voice activities, including discussions and questionnaires

The PSHE subject leader, senior leaders and governors work together to review the curriculum annually. Updates to national guidance, diocesan advice, PSHE Association recommendations and Ten Ten resources inform ongoing development, ensuring continuous improvement in PSHE provision.
