Week 1
The children have had a fantastic start to the year, and we are so proud of how quickly they have settled into their new routines. This week we have been busy exploring our new classroom and settling into our learning spaces.
In English, we have enjoyed reading 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?' The children have had lots of fun designing their own characters and writing the next part of the story. In Maths, we have been learning about positional language, using words such as: next to, behind, in front of and between to describe where objects are. In Science, the children enjoyed being ‘materials detectives’, searching around the classroom to find different objects and identifying the materials they are made from.
Week 2
In Year 1 Drawing Club, we explored the story Shark in the Park! After reading, the children unleashed their creativity by designing their own sharks, parks, and imagining what they might spot through a telescope. Their artwork was full of imagination and fun!
In maths, the children have been practising their subitising skills up to 10, becoming quicker at recognising numbers without counting. They have also been exploring different ways to represent numbers around the classroom using objects. In RE, the children enjoyed retelling the story of Creation, thinking carefully about the wonderful world around us. The children have worked hard and enjoyed their learning this week. The children have also been learning about colour in art, mixing shades and painting a colour wheel, which they found very enjoyable.
Week 3
Year One have been doing lots of interesting learning this week. In English, we have been reading the story Stick Man. We designed our own stick creatures and even wrote sentences about what we think could have happened next in the story. We had so much fun making our own Stick Man too, using lots of different materials to bring him to life!
In Maths, we have been learning about the words “fewer” and “more” and exploring what they mean. In Science, we carried out an experiment to find out which type of paper was the most absorbent, and we discovered that toilet paper was the best.
In History, we really enjoyed looking at each other’s baby photos and sticking both a baby photo and a recent photo on a timeline. In RE, we worked with our partners to retell the story of creation. We also played a game called 'Speak to an Expert', using a sheet with words linked to the creation story, and we had to try and use them in sentences about creation to earn points.
Week 4
In Year One, the children have been enjoying their learning across the curriculum. In Maths, they have been exploring one more and one less through practical activities. In Science, they carried out an experiment to investigate waterproof materials. In English, we have begun learning about an inspirational individual for Black History Month.
Week 5
This week in Year 1, we have been comparing numbers using language such as greater than, more than, and less than. In English, we have been writing fact files about Marcus Rashford as part of our Black History Month focus, learning all about his inspiring work both on and off the pitch.
We also really enjoyed our Phonics Café, where parents were invited to watch the teacher deliver a short phonics lesson and listen to their child read – all while enjoying a tasty biscuit! It was lovely to see so many families join us for this special event
Week 6
This week in Maths, the children have been practising writing numbers in words, with a focus on accurate spelling. In Art, they learned about the artist Wassily Kandinsky and created their own vibrant circle patterns, experimenting with mixing paints to discover new shades and tints. We also spent time rehearsing for our Black History Month assembly, and the children were excited to take part and perform with such confidence!
