Black History Month

Class Teacher: Mrs Ferrin/Miss Lee

Early Years Practitioner: Miss Bunnage

To celebrate Black History Month in Reception, we read stories and learnt about some Caribbean and African histories, traditions and customs.
We read 'Handa's Surprise', and completed observational drawings of the fruit Handa wanted to gift to her friend Akeyo. We also had the opportunity to try some of these yummy fruits!

We read 'Coming to England' and Mrs Ferrin shared her Grandad's story of his journey from Jamaica to England. We worked together to recreate the Empire Windrush. In addition, we read 'My Two Grandads' and 'My Two Grannies'.

Reception also celebrated Black American history. We learnt about Garrett Morgan, who invented the three position traffic signal. The children drew their own traffic lights and then collaged each light using a variety of materials.
